Why Investing in an Ergonomic Chair Is Smart Business

Why a Quality Ergonomic Chair Is Worth the Investment

One thing that almost everyone agrees upon these days is that in order to work effectively, efficiently, and creatively, you have to be comfortable. This is where the term “ergonomics” comes into play. What does it mean? It means creating a workspace that allows efficient, natural movement that’s more comfortable for you.

The drawbacks of a non-ergonomic workspace have been well-documented. They include issues such as increased sick days, burnout, lethargy, low work output, and even joint and body problems that slow a person down.

DLX offers an office chair that is put together from the ground up with ergonomics in mind. Finding the right ergonomic solution is an investment, but it pays off. We’ll get into the details here, but to see everything DLX has to offer, be sure to visit our website to schedule a virtual tour or an in-person experience.

Understanding Ergonomics

Let’s get the technical science stuff out of the way. According to the International Ergonomics Association, the definition of ergonomics  is “The scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles, data and methods to design in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance.”

Sounds great, but what does it mean? Well, the entire study of ergonomics pulls together elements of anatomy, physiology, psychology, engineering, and statistics to ensure that products (for our concerns, office furniture) complement the strengths of individuals and their abilities while minimizing the effects of their limitations. It helps determine how to best design products to suit the people who need to use said products.

With office equipment, this means features like:

  • A keyboard that keeps arms and wrists at a more natural, comfortable angle to reduce fatigue
  • Desks that are adjustable or the right height to allow for natural movements
  • A computer mouse that allows for a more natural fit in the hand to minimize wrist movements and reduce the chance of problems like carpal tunnel syndrome
  • An office chair that offers comfort, and the maximum amount of support, height, and adjustability to ensure a comfortable posture and working position

It’s the last one that we, of course, have worked on the most. Let’s look at what makes an office chair great for the best possible working experience.

What Makes a Good Ergonomic Office Chair?

There’s a lot that goes into a good, ergonomic office chair. This is why it took us years to develop the chairs we make today. Here are some of the things you should consider when buying a chair, and that we considered when making one:

  1. Adjustability. More than just the height and the arm rests. The right ergonomic chair should adjust in ways to support your back, shoulders, neck, and head, too. The right chair offers the ability to be adjusted for maximum comfort and efficiency of movement to be productive when working, without creating fatigue or strain.
  2. Seat support. The right ergonomic office chair has a soft, deep cushion for you to sit on. That’s nice, but there’s more to it than that. It should also support your spine and offer support for your upper legs. This helps you keep the right posture, avoid slouching, and create the right position for you to work efficiently.
  3. Proper back support. Cheap chairs do not support your back properly. The right kind of chair allows you to adjust your back support, so you don’t end up straining yourself just by sitting down. One of the key components of comfort in an ergonomic chair is lumbar support, which provides adjustability for your lower back.
  4. Armrests. The right armrests will be soft and comfortable. They should be adjustable to help maintain the right typing posture for maximum comfort and minimum stress on the wrists and other joints.
  5. Ability to recline. Each person has a different body size, shape, and posture, so the right tilt to the chair is important for comfort and ability to work. Of course, the ability to lean back when thinking or having a meeting is also a pleasant touch.
  6. Headrest. When leaning back or even just sitting up straight, a headrest reduces fatigue on the neck and base of the skull. This can help reduce headaches and neck strain, which both lead to tiredness and a lack of productivity.

The Benefits of an Ergonomic Office Chair

We’ve touched on some benefits of an ergonomic, adjustable, comfortable office chair, but let’s run down some of those benefits again here:

  • Improved comfort equals improved efficiency. The more comfortable you are, the more likely you are to sit at your desk and work. The right ergonomic chair will also adjust so you can be comfortable and less strained in your work efforts.
  • Better working environment. The improved comfort and efficiency create a better overall working environment you’ll enjoy and will help you produce quality work more effectively and efficiently .
  • Fewer days taken off because of illness or injury. Mental and physical fatigue from cheaper, less ergonomic office chairs can lead to illnesses and time taken off from work. The right investment in a proper chair reduces that issue, creating a healthier overall working environment.
  • Increased productivity. When you’re comfortable in your office and at your desk, you work better and are more productive, creative, and efficient in your work.
